Thai Airways have revealed plans to re-open long haul routes to the U.S.

The government-subsidized airline scrapped the direct flights to New York in 2008 following big losses. Connecting flights to Los Angeles via Seoul were stopped in 2015.

But the flag carrier, re branded as THAI, is pushing for U.S. safety regulators to lift bans imposed on Thai Airways last year over safety standard concerns.

It would allow the troubled airline to reintroduce routes into the lucrative but highly competitive U.S. market.

THAI president Charamporn Jotikasthira said they hope to launch routed to Seattle of San Francisco.

‘The service will be the first non-stop flight from Bangkok without stopping over in Korea or Japan like before. It will be a key selling point for us because no other airlines operate a direct flight from the U.S. to Bangkok, ‘ he told the Bangkok Post.

Mr Charamporn said THAI would increase flights to Moscow would increase from four a week to seven. Russian tourists are the biggest group of visitors from Europe and numbers are expected to grow.

THAI will also operate a Tehran service to tap into Iran’s population of leisure and business travellers.
