Great accommodation and value for money
Kao Lak is one of those beautiful resorts that fly under the radar in Thailand. But it's well worth a visit and Motive Cottage is a great place to stay. Value for money is excellent. The rooms are clean, well decorated, in a great location and staff are always friendly and helpful.
Motive Cottage Resort is a small hotel in Khao Lak in southern Thailand. If you haven’t been to Khao Lak before of heard of this stunning resort, read our guide to the area of Khao Lak. It’s certainly one of the lesser-known areas of Thailand for holidays, but is popular with middle aged couples from continental Europe, and for divers visiting the Similan Islands.
There are a range of small hotels and apartments and larger resort type complexes. One of the best is perhaps Motive Cottage Resort. It’s actually not a resort, but a small block or around 30 apartments next to a small pool.
Each one is furnished neatly inside with bed, table, bathroom, sideboards and wardrobe, and a small lounge area with Thai triangle floor pillows for relaxing with a view of the pool. It is clean, well organised and the staff are helpful, professional and attentive. Perhaps the only point which could be improved are the TVs – they still use the big box kind instead of the modern flatscreens, but hey, they work fine.
Motive is a smaller hotel, which means that staff can give better attention to their low number of guests. There is a real personal and friendly feel to the place. The adjoining seafood restaurant is also great value, though there are dozens more all within a short walk to choose from.
Which brings us on to the location. Motive Cottage Resort is at the top end of the main road that runs through the tourist area of Kao Lak in the Bang Niang district. This has plenty of bars and Thai restaurants along the main road, and on the road going to the beach. Plus about 2km down the road is the next settlement of Nang Thong, with more bars, restaurants and shops. This means that Motive Cottage is an a great location for all of these, as well as being a great base from which to take day trips and tours to the Similan Islands for scuba diving and snorkelling, as the piers from which the boats leave are just a 20 minute car journey away.
Price for one night at Motive Cottage begins at around 1,000 Thai baht but may vary slightly depending on which site the reservation is made from, or the season. It’s a great price though for the hotel.
